Bastille Day
By : Anargi Jayakody
Bastille day is celebrated on the 14 of July in France. It is the French National day. Bastille day became a national holiday on the 6 of July 1880, on Benjamin Raspail recommendation when the new republic was formed. Bastille day is celebrated in all the french speaking countries. The name Bastille came from a huge prison in France which only held seven prisoners. ( It was supposed to have thirteen prisoners.) The Bastille prison was the symbol of despotic power of the king Louis the 16th’s reign. Bastille day is also the start of the French Revolution. The angry citizens of France attacked the royal palace and freed the prisoners from the Bastille Prison. The storming of the prison was a symbol of liberty and the fight against oppression for all French citizens. The citizens captured this symbol and showed that the King’s power was no longer absolute; power should be based of the nation. The Tricolore flag, symbolizes the Republic's three ideals:Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity for all French citizens.Bastille comes from the French word bastide, which means stronghold. The French national song is called : La Marseillaise. It was written in 1972 and declared as the National Anthem in 1975. The National holiday represents the Birth of the Republic.
French Revolution
For centuries, the quality of life in Europe had been determined by the status that one held. This status could not be attained, but was instead determined by the family to which someone was born. If you were born to a poor family, your life would be one of poverty. No matter how hard an individual worked, it was impossible to rise above this fate. The wealthy enjoyed a life of ease, comfort and recreation. Day after day, they pursued the pleasures of European society, while 97% of Europe’s people struggled just to survive. This gap between the wealthy and the poor created resentment. Those at the bottom saw the wealthy grow increasingly richer, while the poor got nothing.
Then, in 1776, something unthinkable happened. A group of people at the bottom of society rebelled against those who were at the top, and what was more remarkable was that, they won. The British Colonies in America declared their independence and then enforced it by beating back the most powerful military on Earth.
This sent shockwaves throughout Europe, and gave hope to many poverty-stricken peasants who wanted to see the powerful aristocracies of Europe fall. If America could do it, why couldn’t they? Why couldn’t they rebel and create a new, fairer society?
Bastille Day Celebrations
The Bastille Day Celebrations, in France and other french speaking countries, start with a military parade of smart soldiers wearing freshly ironed costumes costumes. The military parade is held in the morning of the fourth of July. It is the oldest and largest regular military parade in Europe. Of course, France always celebrates an occasion with food. They have their unique food snails, and different types of delicious cheese made in various provinces. French people wear lovely dresses and celebrate their national day with wine and music. Oh! It is so amazing and exciting. PeoplePeople in France celebrate their national day by lighting fire crackers and fireworks. It is a breathtaking site.
